Dr Stephen Fung

Specialist Anaesthetist MBBS PostGradDipClinEd FANZCA

Dr Stephen Fung is a generalist anaesthetist who has special interests in providing anaesthesia for patients requiring surgery on their neck and spine, and patients requiring surgery on their major blood vessels: vascular surgery.

These two areas of interest allow him to give patients and surgeons the best level of care, not only for these specialised areas but also for other complex surgical procedures in patients with a wide variety of medical conditions.

Dr Fung’s career path began with a Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery from James Cook University. His training took him to city and rural areas in Queensland, including the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Rockhampton. He finished his training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital where he did a fellowship in vascular anaesthesia and continues to work as a senior staff specialist.

Some of Dr Fung’s other responsibilities include vascular anaesthesia fellowship supervisor, vascular study unit supervisor for anaesthetic trainees, and vascular and interventional radiology service liaison.

He has a Post-graduate Certificate of Clinical Education from Flinders University in South Australia and is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA).

Dr Fung’s main motivation to become an anaesthetist was to provide compassionate and holistic care for patients at a time when they may feel most anxious: the perioperative period.

As well as caring for patients in Brisbane, Dr Fung travels to Samoa every year to provide aid work with a vascular team. He also finds time to be a Senior Lecturer for medical students at The University of Queensland.
