Dr Justin Smith

Specialist Anaesthetist MBBS, BSc, FANZCA

Dr Justin Smith strives to make his patients’ journey through surgery as comfortable as possible, using education and reassurance, and the most up-to-date techniques, anaesthetics and medications.

His experience is broad and spans all areas of surgical practice. However, he does have special interest and skills in vascular anaesthesia and regional anaesthesia, especially eye blocks. Dr Smith completed a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in 1997 and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2001, both at the University of Queensland, and his Diploma of Fellowship, Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) in 2011.

Dr Smith has worked in the UK and Australia and has spent much of his career at the Princess Alexandra (PA) Hospital where he pursued a Cardiac Anaesthesia Fellowship and became a staff specialist in his areas of special interest.

Dr Smith is part of the River City Anaesthesia team and continues to spend time at the PA Hospital training the next generation of anaesthetists and nurses. He is the lead supervisor of training for anaesthetic doctors, on faculty for simulation training, he supervises the vascular anaesthesia training module and runs an advanced perioperative nursing program. Dr Smith also works in several private hospitals undertaking ophthalmic anaesthesia.

Dr Smith’s interest in anaesthetics developed while studying anatomy and physiology during his science degree – the next natural step was medicine. He enjoys the problem solving, technical tasks and working effectively with the River City Anaesthesia team to help patients.
